  4.     Applause swept through the General Assembly hall as the vote
  5. flashed on the electronic tally board: 111 to 25. By that
  6. sweeping majority, the United Nations revoked the resolution
  7. equating Zionism with racism, eliminating Israel's main reason
  8. for resenting the world body. Said a jubilant Israeli Foreign
  9. Minister David Levy: "It ends a conspiracy to distort the
  10. truth."

  12.     The resolution was devised in 1975 by the U.S.S.R. to win
  13. Arab fealty against the U.S. in the superpower struggle for
  14. dominance in the Middle East. But the end of the cold war and
  15. the eruption of the gulf war dramatically altered U.N. dynamics,
  16. and President Bush began lobbying for repeal. Washington also
  17. hoped that erasing the resolution would encourage Israeli
  18. reasonableness as Middle East peace talks got under way.

  20.     The nay votes were cast mostly by Arab and Muslim states
  21. plus the communist countries of Cuba, North Korea and Vietnam.
  22. An Arab spokesman argued that repeal would only "whet the
  23. appetite of Israeli extremists' creeping annexation," and Saudi
  24. Arabia's U.N. Ambassador, Samir Shihabi, boycotted the session.
  25. Biggest winner: the U.N., freed of an albatross.
